How do you make your success inevitable?
Last night, I finally cast off a knitting project that had been on the needles for months.
It felt like I had been working on it forever, never to be finished. I started it last fall, but set it aside to work on projects that were more interesting, or time sensitive. I’d come back to it, knit a few rows here and there, and then set it aside again for something else.
The last few weeks were different. I had just finished a big project, and was waiting on yarn for the next one to arrive. I was able to consistently work on it, one row at a time, until finally, a few days ago, it felt inevitable that I would finish it.
Have you ever felt this shift?
A question I’ll often ask my coaching clients is “what would it take to make this inevitable?”
Perhaps the thing you want is a promotion, completing a big project, or to be thriving in your new role.
Or maybe it’s personal, like living into a better balance between work and life, or moving to a new city, or becoming financially independent.
This question, “what would it take to make this inevitable” brings a variety of answers.
Sometimes it raises external dependencies, places where someone else needs to do something in order to make it happen, like a hiring manager extending a job offer or a team member finishing a deliverable on time.
But more often, it uncovers things within our control, things we need to do to make our future happen.
The belief that we need to hold about belonging in the room, being capable of stepping up to the challenge, or being able to let go of control.
The habit that builds upon itself, creating its own compound interest. Carving out time for the daily writing habit, setting the phone aside an hour before we want to go to bed, going to the gym day after day.
What comes to mind as you read this?
What is the thing that you need to do or believe on a regular basis, over time, to make the thing you want inevitable?
Do you want your success to be inevitable? Start with these three questions:
What’s the thing you need to do, again and again?
Where do you want to show up, consistently, for yourself? Perhaps it’s a belief you need to continue to remind yourself of, or space in your routine you would like to carve out.
What is most likely to get in your way of doing the thing, again and again?
Is there an outdated belief that keeps creeping back into your mind? A common distraction that pulls you away from the work you want to do?
How can you make it as easy as possible for you to do the thing, again and again?
What can you do to set yourself up for consistent momentum, so when you sit down to do the thing, it’s easy to start and get going?
That big thing you want, the thing that would make your life just that much better…can it be had by showing up consistently, time after time, again and again?
What will you do to make that thing inevitable?
